But your character has different goals you need to a) help get others to safety, b) stay in New York so that you can update Congress on the situation, c) find safe places from which you can access the Internet in order to send email and pictures to Congress, and maybe even d) look awesome and brave during this whole process, in order to show your constituents how calm you are under pressure. The article that I chose to discuss is entitled â€Å"Avian Flu: Is the Government Ready for an Epidemic?† and was published on the ABC News website on September 15, 2005. The journalists name was not published. The article opens with the lines â€Å"It could kill a billion people worldwide, make ghost towns out of parts of major cities, and there is not enough medicine to fight it. It is called the avian flu.† Throughout the rest of the article, the journalist goes on about the horrors that could occur if avian flu were to mutate so that it was able to be transferred from human to human, and not just from bird to human as is now the case. The journalist quotes Dr. Irwin Redlener, the director of the National Center for Disaster Preparedness as saying â€Å"The tipping point, the place where it becomes something of an immediate concern, is where that virus changes, we call it mutates, to something that is able to go from human to human,† and then states that scientists around the world are now working around the clock as they wait for that tipping point. However, at no time does he inform the reader that all viruses mutate naturally over and over again, and that the chance of the H5N1 strain, mutating into a strain that could pass from human to human is in no way an eventuality, or even a likely outcome. He just takes quotes from various scientists around the world who are expressing a worry about what could happen in the event that H5N1 were to mutate, and uses them to imply that this is a very likely possibility. The journalist also likens an Avian Flu pandemic to Hurricane Katrina, an event that was at the foremost of people’s minds when the article was published and uses purposefully disturbing imagery that has been shown on TV about Hurricane Katrina, such as people dying in the airports and the utter helplessness of the Superbowl, to cause people to panic and worry that bird flu is likely to devastate the country at any second in order to bring to light the Government’s unpreparedness for an outbreak. He then goes on to discuss what he calls an â€Å"inadequate stockpile of medicine† and blames the Government for not having stockpiled enough Tamiflu, which he equates to a miracle drug which will stop H5N1 in its tracks. However, while he is happy to imply, in the beginning of the article, that the H5N1 virus is likely to mutate at any time, he conveniently ignores this when he talks about Tamiflu, and nowhere does he state that while this drug can help people who have contracted bird flu, it is only useful to the current strain of the virus and if it mutates, which he assures us it will, there is no guarantee that it will be of any use to those infected. I feel that these are unforgivable exaggerations of the disease and its dangers and that the journalist was simply interested in sensationalism and causing a public outcry and panic. Expert opinions on the dangers of the H5N1 virus are currently very varied and divided and a lot is still unknown about the disease, but at no time does this article bring that to light. Laura Chang, of the New York Times said it best when she said that journalists shouldn’t â€Å"write articles that might feed a sense of panic, such as telling people to stock up on Tamiflu, or dramatizing how a pandemic would spread through a particular city. The bug, which can lead to a deadly flesh-eating form of pneumonia, is 13 times more prevalent among the city's gay men than other people. However, at no time does the article explain what MRSA is or that it is not in fact, anything like HIV or AIDS. MRSA is in fact caused by a bacterium, already a vast difference from the virus that causes aids, that is responsible for difficult-to-treat infections in humans. The organism can also be further classified into either Community-Associated MRSA or Hospital-Associated MRSA depending on the circumstances in which the patient acquired the disease. The article goes on to focus on one strain of the disease, a strain known as the USA300 strain and the journalist notes that â€Å"the USA300 bug, is not caught in hospitals but spreads through a community, often by casual contact† which is true, as it is a community-associated strain of MRSA that is spread by skin to skin contact. However, the journalist then goes on to suggest that this strain, which is as a particularly antibiotic resistant epidemic that is responsible for rapidly progressive, fatal diseases, is only likely to affect the gay community. However this is not the case and as MRSA is not a sexually transmitted disease there is no way it could only affect only the gay community. The USA300 strain is passed on by skin-to-skin contact and therefore cannot be liked to HIV which is transmitted only through direct contact with the bodily fluids of an infected individual. While practicing homosexuals are at risk of being affected by the USA300 strain, the disease has also been reported by people in athletic teams, correctional facilities, military recruits and newborn nurseries. I believe this article is simply an example of sensationalism in the media. It does not focus on any of the facts, and makes purposefully sweeping and false statements about MRSA and its similarity to HIV, which couldn’t be further from the truth. They had murdered the Roman leader in an effort to save the Republic from Caesar’s aspirations for sole power† (McGill, Sarah Ann) In spring of 44 BCE Augustus formerly known as Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus, or Octavious for short, became ruler of Rome. Adopted by Julius Caesar after traveling alongside him for many years and throughout many battles, being the only male relative and it being written in Caesars will, Augustus was heir to the throne and quickly began making an impact on roman society. â€Å"Caesar Augustus rose from near obscurity to become the most powerful man Rome had ever seen, and he became perhaps the single most important figure in Rome’s long history. † (Sizgorich, Tom. â€Å"Augustus) Starting his reign at age 18, very young and inexperienced he would have to gain the trust and support of the empire as a whole. Very intuitively and keen, he started at the base of it all, the people. Initiating public games loved by them as a source of entertainment, when a comet flew by on the first day, everyone took it as Caesar’s soul ascending to the heavens, this greatly helped win his popularity among his great uncles army he left and also made him allies within the senate. But with allies, would come opponents, one man in particular, Mark Antony, whom was a close ally with Caesar and fought against the party that assassinated him. Tensions between the two were short after they formed a group to eliminate opposing forces such as the one that killed Caesar, lead by Marcus Brutus and Gaius Cassius Longinus. â€Å"The alliance between Antony and Octavian could not last, however; after the defeat of the conspirators, Octavian set about building a base of support for himself among the Romans, anticipating the confrontation with Antony that he knew would come. † (Sizgorich, Tom. â€Å"Augustus) â€Å"Octavian began preparing to confront Antony. Antony had angered many Romans because of his relationship with the queen of Egypt, Cleopatra. Octavian took advantage of this anger to gain further support against Antony. † (â€Å"Augustus, Caesar Octavianus. † Ancient Greece and Rome) Acute and sharp as he was, Augustus began to realize the roman public was outraged that Antony had been willingly manipulated by queen Cleopatra of Egypt. He set out to defeat Antony and Cleopatra’s army. When he finally did so, the couple committed suicide and allowed Augustus to finally have full control over all of Rome. He did not want to rule as his uncle did, so in order to convince the public and senate he would not do so he, articulated the â€Å"Princep† title. Deriving from Latin meaning â€Å"first citizen† suggesting that he held only the same power as all others in the senate, but no one was to be above him in ruling. Augustus wasted no time as sole leader of Rome, he extended the borders, instituted construction of new buildings, water systems and roads. He maintained public order and law, supported writers such as Virgil and Livy to bring back more traditional Roman values, and introduced a new religion to society, â€Å"Christianity. † At one point he offered to relinquish all of his power to the senate, but they would not oblige. In fact they revered him even more and allotted him with the title Augustus, which is when he adopted the name and dropped the name Octavious. Augustus proclaimed that he had â€Å"found Rome a city of bricks and left it a city of marble. † (â€Å"Augustus, Caesar Octavianus. † Ancient Greece and Rome) By the end of his rule, Rome was flourishing, rich and prosperous was the whole empire. Lined with armies protecting all borders, creating a safe environment for all of Rome, it has been deemed â€Å"Rome’s Golden Age† or â€Å"Pax Romana† and was the period in time when the civilization experienced the most peace and prosperity. Augustus passed away in AD 14 and Tiberius took control over Rome as his stepson. It is easy to see how Augustus was named Person of the year, he accomplished more in his lifetime than any other individual I can name Reforming government and military, restoring Roman traditions and values, and vastly expanding the empire. And gaining the love and support of the people, the senate, and the army at the same time, it’s no wonder why the senate held him at the level of a god when he passed. Censorship Have you ever been listening to the radio and heard a beep in some parts of the song youre listening to? You know, the annoying sound that interrupts the song? The sound is a familiar one among those of us that listen to the radio, in particular Rap/ hip-hop music stations. This noise is heard because its used to bleep out/censor the word that was previously there; the word was most likely bad or offensive. Censorship Is a growing concern for our society, whether Its because of the lack of censorship or too much.To understand censorship, Its important that you know exactly what it is. According to an article by Jonathan Alter, Lets Stop Crying Wolf on Censorship he believes that too many people are classifying something as censorship when in fact it isnt. If a record-company executive or an art gallery owner or a book publisher declines to disseminate something, thats not censorship, its Judgment (Alter 67) Alter wants to get a point across that you cant just cry Censorshi p every time something Is changed, which a lot of people are doing. He tries to connect editing an article and changing song lyrics, and identify them as essentially the same thing. If an editor wants to change the text of an article about ghetto life, thats editing. But if a rap producer wants to change sociopath lyrics, thats seen as censorship. (67) If you think about this, it makes sense. How would an editor wanting to change an article be classified any differently than a rap producer wanting to change lyrics?Why Is changing the lyrics seen as censorship, but changing the article seen as editing? Alter also makes a strong point that censorship is induced solely by the government, Real censorship is when the governmentthe overspentbans books in school libraries, prosecutes artists and writers for their work, seizes pornography, exercises prior restraint. (67) After reading all of this you might start to question yourself (just as I did), what exactly is censorship?The dictionary definition of censorship is defined as the following: the suppress ion of speech or other public communication which may be considered objectionable, harmful, sensitive, politically Incorrect or Inconvenient as determined by a government, media outlet or other controlling body. According to the definition of censorship, in all reality Alters arguments are invalid. Censorship doesnt only exist by means of the government; it can very well exist anywhere including in music and by producers. If a rap producer wants to change sociopath lyrics, its most likely because those lyrics are found harmful or objectionable.In that case, requiring the music artist to change those lyrics Is Indeed censorship. Every day In the rap music industry artists get their music tweaked around. An artist may be asked to change a certain word or words before his/her song is released, to provide an entire different version of the song (explicit/non-explicit), or the song could even be rejected altogether. When an artists song plays on the radio words that are deemed offensive are bleeped out. All of these things are censorship. An artist Is required to change appropriate or accepted.When an artists music is bleeped out on the radio, it often makes the song difficult to understand. It isnt fair to ask an artist to change the lyrics they originally had, nor does it make sense. If you take the word out that the artist originally had and put pickle in its place, it wouldnt make sense. Its changing the artists original meaning for the song. Now with that being said, things that arent en as wrong/offensive arent censored in songs, but where exactly should the line between wrong and offensive be drawn?Some things could be seen as offensive and taken the wrong way, when really the artist had an entirely different meaning. This can be read about in an article written by Connie Benches called The Good, The bad, and the Censored where she expresses the views of rappers and their feelings on being censored. One rapper who had his lyrics taken in the wrong context was Sir- Mix-A-Lot. Believe it or not, some people didnt like when I used the word mayonnaise. And I didnt use it in a bad context, insists the rapper. Im not talking about sperm when I say It anti good without the mayonnaise. Im saying, When somethings good to you, its not necessarily good for you. Its not the tapers whose minds are in the gutters. To equate mayonnaise with sperm, thats kind of sad. (Benches 42) Some artists feel that being forced to change their words is an obstruction of freedom of speech. Yes, there are FCC regulations that need to be followed but that doesnt make them moral. A lot of controversy exists in rap because of the things that are expressed in rap songs and even videos. But deep down rap isnt all about degrading women, shooting people, or doing drugs.Most and I stress most, rappers rap about their struggles and life growing up but not all of them. Some rappers didnt have a tough life, but most of the gangs rap raps about real struggles that they and their culture went through. Rap has a history, and to understand why rappers write about the things they do, you have to understand where it came from. [rap] expresses views and opinions; it has its own language, fashion, the way we walk -? that bop, that swagger. Its a subculture thats evolved in he inner city and has become global. Said Mecca A. K. A.Grimm (a Haitian rapper) (Peter Kate) People that dont listen to rap have every right to choose not to listen to it, but dont bash on it because its not what you like listening to. Dont make rappers suppress their feelings and creativity because you dont want to hear it, Just dont listen to it. While some people see rap as being harmful it can be Just the opposite for some of the listeners; they listen to rap to help inspire them and stray them away from their ghetto lives. Rapper, David Banner, is very entrepreneurship. Hip-hop mogul Simmons proposal to ban offensive words is stupid, Banner says. There was a time in history when we didnt have a choice about being called a Niger. Now that were making money off it, its a problem. (Kate) Though it may be seen primarily as a form of entertainment, rap has the powerful potential to address social, economic, and political issues and act as a unifying voice for its audience. (Becky Blanchard) Rap faces a lot of scrutiny and struggles to people that are outside of the hip hop community. Record companies are mainly worried about raps selling. If they have to Orca the artist to change their words so that a song will sell, then thats what they do.They dont care about the rappers roots or the message the rapper wants to get across. Is rap music violent? Well sure. But thats what the rap culture is about, it has views? They shouldnt. Rap should not also be blamed for the violence in America. Violence is violence, it goes on everywhere. Not Just because a rap song is talking about it. Further, these rappers claim that it is not only African-Americans who are gangsters, but rather that American history, also, has been characterized by conquest, rebellion, and bloodshed.Rapper Ice Cube points to the hypocrisy of politicians, who use bombing campaigns to kill on a worldwide level, to blame gangsters for violence in American culture: We do things on a small level, but America does it on a big level. It anti Just us. White people do everything we do. (Blanchard) Censorship of rap music can be beneficial in many ways. It will protect children from hearing harmful things; it prevents public disrespect of people/things, shields the morals of society, and even restricts vulgarity. But how does censorship harm us and the ones being censored?It compromises the freedom f speech and it restricts an artists creativity and feelings. Censorship compromises a songs ability to be entertaining, and it restrains views. It only projects one side of a view because the other is being censored. Furthermore, if you censor something then it is normally obvious that it was censored. If youre listening to a song on the radio and you hear a bleep then you know there is an offensive word there. You might be able to guess what the word/sentence was, or you will become curious and go look it up. Even if these words are offensive, what remains to be understood is how is it rutting anyone by letting these words be said without censorship. (Christopher Schneider) If you support censorship because you are worried about children hearing such vulgar things then maybe you should have bigger concerns. Why are they listening to something that you find to be so inappropriate in the first place? You should keep your children from listening to things you dont think they should be hearing. You can only do so much to keep them from hearing offensive things. They are going to hear it eventually one way or another, even if music is censored.Its reality. If you dont want to hear something that you think is wrong, then dont listen. Turn the radio off or listen to a different station. If you dont want your child listening to inappropriate things, then dont expose them to it. We as adults can filter what we want and do not want to listen to. If you like a censored version of a song but dont like the uncensored, then do you really like the song? An artist dedicated their feelings and time to making a song and put who they are into the music they make. If something is censored, not by their choice, then it isnt them and its not what they originally intended for the song. As with most artists today, there is a feeling of great restriction when it comes to their music. The freedom of speech is heavily prohibited and as is their freedom of expression. (Peterson 591) There are many pros to censorship, but there are significant cons to consider too. The cons ethically should outweigh the pros of censorship. Think about the artists who are producing the music and what censorship will do to them. They are getting their rights suppressed, and are being prohibited from expressing how they feel. If we continue to let enshrines in music be okay, its only going to progress and get worse.
